The Mitchell Report said that over 50 percent of baseball players have been using steroids. At any one time there are over 700 major league baseball players, and over the course of the last 15 years, a rough guess would be that something like 1,500 players have played the game (since players come and go from the major leagues).
So Mitchell in essense estimated that at least 750 players over this time took steroids.
Jose Canseco's number was 80 percent. That's about 1,200.
That all being said, how come Mitchell's report only listed 40 players? These are the ones he had evidence for, based on a fairly shallow report that used the trainer of the NY Mets as their main source.
These 40 players are offered up as sacrificial lambs. And Roger Clemens is now the defacto number 1 sacrificial lamb. Get everyone's attention off the fact that usage of steroids was PERVASIVE. EVERYONE WAS DOING IT.
What is going on in Congress now is a witch hunt. Roger Clemens is up at the stake.
He's handled it wrong. He shouldn't have lied. He should have gone on 60 minutes and shot back at Mike Wallace:
"Sure I'll take a lie detector test, but I want EVERY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER WHO PLAYED THE GAME THE LAST 15 YEARS TO TAKE THE SAME LIE DETECTOR TEST. I WANT EVERY MEMBER OF THE MEDIA TO TAKE THE SAME TEST. I WANT YOU MIKE WALLACE, TO TAKE THE SAME LIE DETECTOR TEST -- ASK YOU WHY YOU WEREN'T COVERING THIS STORY 10 YEARS AGO WHEN EVERYONE KNEW EVERYONE WAS ON STEROIDS AND NO ONE SEEMED TO CARE. I WANT THE COMMISSIONER OF BASEBALL TO TAKE THE SAME TEST, AND ALL THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, AND ALL THE FANS TOO".
Ten years ago, even 5 years ago, advertisements like "Putting your career on steroids" were deemed fashionable. Now, steroids are the bad and the ugly -- which they should be. But let's not rewrite history, have everyone get up on their high horse, and point fingers at the selected few "witches".
Roger Clemens was wrong. So was everyone else. Put them ALL UP THERE IN FRONT OF CONGRESS.
A LIE DETECTOR FOR EVERYONE.
INCLUDING: Martina Navratilova Evander Hollyfield Mike Tyson All the other boxers Anthony Mason of the NY Knicks All the other NBA players including Michael Jordan The ENTIRE NFL The ENTIRE NHL
All we have here with Roger Clemens is a witch hunt.
And how on earth does Bud Selig still have his job? He's been the number one finger pointer, sitting on his high horse.

Bud Selig is as much to blame as Donald Fehr and the Players Union for the way the whole steriod issue was handled. Seligs stupidity along with Fehrs reluctance to cooperate with MLB basically led to the Clemens "witch hunt".
Congress took careful aim at MLB's top two players Bonds and Clemens because they were easy targets. MLB should have never let their "Poster Boys" be exposed to a congressional hearing.
Selig & Fehr could have/should have diffused the situation before it turned into a kangaroo court by standing together and proclaiming to Congress that they were aware of but did nothing about the steroid useage and that they would not make examples of players who did use steroids because it was a global MLB issue with guilt across all levels.
They should have also stood together and said that they were now gprepared to move forward to work together to eliminate PED (perfomance enhancing drugs) in MLB by agreeing and unveling an agressive testing and punishment program that would satisfy Congress and the American public.
In the eyes of most MLB fans, Bonds and Clemens will never be held in the same esteem as Aaron, Ruth and Koufax, Gibson anyway so the record books will mean less than they did in years past. The game is geared more towards scoring runs with smaller ballparks and umpires who don`t call strikes.
You mentioned other Pro Leagues and I agree with you that all modern USA based pro sports are tainted by steroid & PED use.
The NFL in particular is guilty of doing the best job in hiding its PED use. How can anyone believe that 325 lb linemen are "normal" ?? Every team in the NFL has them.
285 lb Linebackers 255 lb Cornerbacks ??
Even the kickers are beginning to look like Tight Ends.
At least baseball in its own half-assed way has begun to turn the corner back to "normalcy".
RIP Bobby Murcer.
Not sure what the future of this forum will be with his passing but "Thank You" anyway.
